Genesis
Workingman Capital was founded on a simple observation: when industrial businesses run into hard problems: insolvency, a sale, a wind-down, a financing question, an asset that needs a number put on it, they deserve straight answers from people who’ve actually done the work.
So we built a firm around that idea. No layers, no hand-offs, no jargon. Just experienced people helping owners, lenders, and operators make the right call when it matters most, whether that’s appraising assets, monetizing assets, or charting the smartest path to a strategic sale.
A True Story
In 2005, our founder Joshua Sugar was the Vice President of Finance at an established multinational manufacturer in Toronto. The company was in trouble. For months, the executive team worked alongside consultants on scenarios, solutions, and last-ditch proposals. In the end, none of it was enough, and the business went bankrupt.
That experience taught Josh more than business school, a merchant bank, a Big Six bank, and years in manufacturing ever had. He saw firsthand how lonely a distressed situation can feel from the inside, how often the wrong advice arrives at the wrong time, and how much it matters to have someone in the room who has experienced it and understands what’s at stake.
That’s the lens we bring to every client engagement. Real experience. Real empathy. And a deep respect for what it takes to keep a business, and the people who depend on it moving forward.

Fast Forward to Today
Twenty years on, we’ve evaluated and sold hundreds of factories across nearly every industrial sector in North America, from St. John’s to Vancouver, and from Long Island to Los Angeles. Each engagement has added to a body of real-world knowledge no textbook can teach: what equipment actually sells for, how distressed situations actually unfold, and what it really takes to help factory owners be in a better place than before we met.
That experience, across investment, banking, manufacturing, distressed lending, business transition, and industrial auctions is what our clients hire us for. Not theory. Not playbooks. Results.
